Excellent Doctoral Dissertations
The selection of national excellent Doctoral dissertations is ratified and organized by the Ministry of Education and the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council (ADCSC). Its aims are to gradually establish effective quality supervision and inspiration mechanism, to promote the transformation of the focal point of the graduate education to the improvement of education quality, to train and inspire the innovative spirit of the postgraduates studying for the PH. D, and to facilitate creative people of high level to reveal themselves. The selection work has been listed in the "Action Plan of Vitalizing Education Facing the 21st Century".
The selection principles are:to be scientific and fair,to emphasize on innovation, to select strictly, and to put quality before quantity.
The selection standards are: The topic selected should be advanced in one's own discipline and have important theoretical or practical meaning; The dissertation should, theoretically or methodologically, be innovative, have got a breakthrough, which reaches the advanced level of the same discipline, and have good social effects or practical prospects.The dissertation should have full and accurate data, well-knit reasoning, and accurate word expression.
The objects of the selection are the dissertations of those who got their Ph. D. in the units granting doctoral degrees in China in the last academic year of the selection year. The dissertations of those who got their Ph. D. in the last academic years of the selection year, if excellent indeed, can also participate into the selection.
The procedures of the selection include the primary selection conducted by the provincial academic degrees committee or the department in charge of graduate education, the communication appraisal by the experts of the same discipline, the experts meeting of examination, and 60-day objection period. After the objection period, the results should be ratified by the Ministry of Education and the ADCSC.
The selection of national excellent doctoral dissertations started in May, 1998, and it is carried out once a year.
