An Introduction To Subject Evaluation
Subject evaluation is an overall evaluation of a first-class course. Subject evaluation aims at promoting the course development in China; increasing the quality of research and training as well as degree conferral thus to improve the level of postgraduate education and academic degree management; laying emphasis on the fruits of subject construction and postgraduate education as well as their social impacts; providing comparison and contrast for different subjects to focus on their respective advantages and disadvantages; offering related information for talents at different levels to pursue studies or seek employment; at the same time providing evidence for decisions made by the government.
With the rapid development of higher education as well as science and technology,different subjects are becoming more and more interrelated with each other. The nation encourages the training of high-level talents, and the authorization of first-class subject concerning doctor degree and master degree. According to the planning of the national education development, it is suggested that the first-class subjects with master degree authorization are entitled to participate in the evaluation, that is, the first-class subject with only one master program can be included in the evaluation.
The index system of the subject evaluation is constituted according to the practical situation of subject evaluation in China, based on the combination of the expertise views and the standard of subject evaluation abroad. The evaluation system reflects the overall capability of the first-class subject, including the objective evaluation on the involved respects as teaching stuff, scientific research and talents training,as well as the index of the "academic reputation"in the field, which make up the basic contents of the index system of course evaluation.
After the evaluation of the 12 first-class subjects, such as computer science,etc,in 2002,the evaluation of 80 first-class subjects has been achieved. Altogether 375 units, 1365 master programs have been evaluated as the first-class subject. The results have been promulgated through Education Television, Education Daily, Guangming Daily, Chinese Postgraduates and the Internet, which has caused great influence. The evaluation results have been generally accepted by universities and the society.
